Dalton School is a very large primary school, with nearly 500 pupils from nursery to Year 6, situated near to Huddersfield town centre in West Yorkshire. We are within Kirklees Children and Young People Service and are part of the Huddersfield Excellence in Cities cluster of schools. A unique feature of our school is our unit for pupils with a visual impairment. Find out here about this and many other aspects of our school. We are very proud of our school and of the many successful, external judgements people have made about us. One of these is the Kirklees Healthy Schools Standard we were awarded in April 2006. Our assessor was so overwhelmed with aspects of our school he asked the local paper to produce a lengthy article about different aspects of our PSHCE curriculum. At the beginning of 2007 the national recognition of the school's work was upgraded to Kirklees Healthy Schools GOLD AWARD. In September 2006 we were awarded the GOLD STANDARD from the NATIONAL CLEAN AIR AWARD, an initiative from the ROY CASTLE Lung Cancer Foundation in recognition of our outstanding commitment to providing a smoke free environment for all. In January 2006 we were visited by OFSTED who judged different aspects of our school to be either satisfactory, good or outstanding. In late 2005 we were awarded the ARTSMARK for the way we provide a variety of opportunities for all our pupils in music, dance, drama and all the arts. Before that, our Foundation Stage (that’s nursery and reception classes) achieved Quality Assurance from the Effective Early Learning programme from University College Worcester with Investors in Children endorsement. This has been validated for a further year until August 2007. Prior to all these, we were awarded the ACTIVEMARKGOLD from Sport England that demonstrated our commitment to all pupils’ work in sport and activities both in and beyond the normal curriculum time. This prestigious award has also been renewed for a further year until late 2007. Two members of staff, Mrs Eastwood and Mrs Keegan, went to London for the FINALS of the NATIONAL HEALTH FOR KIDS AWARD in mid June. This was as a consequence of the incredible work they do with groups of children as part of the Student Assistance Programme. They work with groups of children who have had a bereavement in their family, or who have experienced divorce or separation in their family or are the perceived victims of bullying away from school. Their presentation was brilliant. They now have to go down to London on 5th October 2007 to a big presentation lunch with SALLY GUNNELL to see if they have won. Isn't this exciting for our school? They WON!! Sally Gunnell presented Mrs Eastwood and Mrs Keegan with their trophy PLUS £1,000 as the judges' unanimous winners of their category "Emotional health and wellbeing, ages 2 -11". BRILLIANT!! During July 2007, our school was judged to be A GOOD SCHOOL WITH SOME OUTSTANDING FEATURES by our Local Authority, Kirkless Children and Young People Service. Notwithstanding these successes, we will all continue to work to improve every aspect of our school to ensure each pupil at Dalton School is able to achieve their very best in everything they may attempt.
